Elave Deep Hydration

Hydrate from the outside in, as well as the inside out, to achieve deeply hydrated, nourished and protected skin

If you have dry skin, you will need to hydrate from the outside in as well as the inside out. It is standard medical advice to drink plenty of water every day, as it is essential for your general good health and well-being. However, even drinking a gallon of water a day will not on its own address the issue of dry skin.

Anyone suffering from very dry skin, eczema or psoriasis, requires Total Emollient Therapy. That is, head-to-toe applications of richly moisturizing formulations which are designed to keep skin hydrated and healthy. If your skin is also sensitive, which dry skin nearly always is, that also requires mild and gentle formulations.

A word of warning: soap is the enemy when it comes to skincare!  Soap is to dry skin what sugar is to a diabetic. Sulfates make products lather and foam, but they are also very drying to the skin. Since they lurk in all sorts of body, face and hair washes, you need to read product labels carefully to make sure you avoid them.

For example, even if you use a soap-free wash and moisturize your face 10 times a day, you will undo all that good if you use a shampoo or hair conditioner which contains sulfates. After all, if you were a diabetic would you stop putting sugar in your coffee – then sit and eat a pound of candy? Again, read the backs of packets and tubes carefully.

Skin is an organ that guards against infections and UV damage

Skin is the body’s largest organ. It needs hydration to do its job of fielding off infection, guarding against UV rays, transmitting sensation, and so on. The outermost layer of skin is made of dead skin cells which, combined with fats called lipids, acts as a dermal barrier. However, some people’s lipid barrier is prone to drying out and this affects the skin cells deeper down.

The result of poor care is that the deeper layers of the skin, which should be plump and elastic, become shrivelled, dull-looking and prone to fine lines. The top layer of skin, which should look bright and smooth, can become scaly, flaky, itchy and cracked. Altogether, it doesn’t look good or feel very comfortable.

Atopic dermatitis, also called eczema, is a common condition where the skin barrier is more prone to losing its integrity. This is exacerbated by, for example, changes in ambient temperature, using soaps and chemicals on your body, taking long, hot showers or baths, or using rough washcloths or exfoliating products.

Elave Baby products are dermatologically and paediatrician approved as safe to use from the day of birth. Having said that, plain water is just fine for the first month of life. Apart from the diaper area, you do not have to bathe your baby every day - a quick dip and gently swirling lukewarm water over him or her two or three times a week is sufficient. If your baby’s hands and feet are dry, apply Elave Baby Intensive cream twice a day.
